HORN

Andrea Carlson

Andrea Carlson was appointed the SDSO’s tenured Fourth Horn in 2010, but began playing regularly with the symphony in 1993 as an Assistant Principal and substitute horn. Andrea also performs as Principal Horn with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra, and the Sioux City Brass Quintet. Andrea serves as the horn instructor at both Augustana University in Sioux Falls, and Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. She also maintains a robust private horn studio, cultivated over the past twenty-four years. Andrea has studied with Sara Cyrus, Nathan Powelek, Herb Winslow (St. Paul Chamber Orchestra), and Michael Thompson (BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra).

Andrea earned a nursing degree from Augustana College in 1996, and has worked as a Registered Nurse with Sanford Acute Care since 2005. She enjoys spending her summers and falls helping to teach the Sioux Falls Lincoln High School Marching Band with her husband of 20 years, Kevin. Andrea and Kevin live in Sioux Falls and have three children, all budding musicians on multiple instruments, including clarinet, trumpet, horn, violin, viola, cello, marching snare drum, and piano. Their children enjoy participating in the SDSYO.
