Gideon Carlisle

A native of Sioux Falls, SD, Gideon Carlisle has been a violist with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra since 2003.  Exposed to chamber and symphonic music at an early age, music has always been an integral part of Carlisle’s life.  Early in his musical career, Carlisle participated in the Interlochen Arts Camp where he was a member of the prestigious Interlochen World Youth Symphony.  Several years later, he was invited to tour Europe as a violist with the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra.  In addition, Carlisle spent a summer at the Madeline Island Chamber Music Camp where he worked with the notable Fry Street Quartet and Arianna String Quartet.

Locally, Carlisle was invited to perform at the Dakota Sky Festival and with the Grammy-nominated South Dakota Chorale.  As his schedule allows, Carlisle is also a violist with the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra.  With the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, Carlisle has performed with world-renowned artists including Emanuel Ax, Sarah Chang, Midori, Alessio Bax, Time for Three, Dawn Upshaw, Ben Folds, and Rufus Wainwright.

Aside from music, Carlisle earned a B.A. degree from Augustana University, majoring in nursing.  He has practiced nursing in Cardiology and the ICU at Sanford Hospital and is currently a registered nurse in the Surgical Center at Vance Thompson Vision.  In addition, he’s completing his graduate degree, studying to be a nurse practitioner.  He resides in Sioux Falls with his wife, Amy (SDSO second violinist), and amazing children, Bentley and Bailey.
